Why you should buy a speedcube
by| Last updated
A speedcube is an optimized version of the regular Magic Cube. But that doesn't mean you cannot start with a speedcube as a beginner.
It's the other way around: Speedcubes are cheap and you can still use them after a while, cause they rotate fast enough for every skill level. The best speedcube in 2019 in our opinion is the D Fantix Cyclone – and it only costs about $8.
In this guide you will learn what makes a speedcube so fast, where the tiny (but important) differences hide and what speedcube is the best option for you.
What makes a great speedcube?
There are many factors you have to look out for. Some are objectively good or bad. In some cases you have to find out what is best for you. Here are the four most important features:
1. Corner cutting & reverse corner cutting
Corner cutting is very important in a quick solve! It is the ability to make a turn, while the vertical face is not fully aligned. Without corner cutting the speedcube would lock up very often. Reverse corner cutting is the ability to make a turn when the center piece is physically blocking the corner piece.
2. Pop resistance
Pop resistance is only important, if you solve the magic cube extremely fast (10 moves per second and above). Most speedcubes are pop resistant, however there is no cube that is 100% save. If a piece pops out during a competition, you're disqualified for that round.
Light speedcubes are not always the best choice. In this case it is a matter of self-preference. If you don't have experience, choose a cube about 80gr, that is the average weight.
4. Magnetic versions
This is a new feature which became popular fast. There are tiny magnets inside the cube that are made to avoid overshooting a turn. Thus, the magnets give a haptic feedback, you get a better feeling of the cube. Of course the magnetic versions are more expensive – but still: If you had never tried a magnetic speedcube before, you will be satisfied.
The 5 best speedcubes
1. D Fantix Cyclone
This budget speedcube got everything you need – and is still very cheap. This cube is the best choice for beginners but is also suitable for professional players. There are no stickers on the cube. That's good, cause stickers will always get loose after a while. The cyclone speedcube is equipped with anti pop technology, corner cutting and adjustable tension. This speedcube weights 76gr and is rather light. A simple instruction is included, so you will be able to solve the cube, even as a newbie.
2. Eyeopener Speedcube
This cheap speedcube made by the brand Eyeopener is also the perfect choice for beginners. The speedcubes turns fast and smooth and has an amazing anti pop technique. You can turn this cube very fast, without the speedcube falling apart. Only negative aspect: There are stickers on this cube, which will get loose after a while.
3. GAN 356 Air Master
This high quality speedcube costs about $25. The cube itself turns very fast. There are no problems with the mechanism itself. The corner cutting is extremely fast and smooth. The cube weights about 72gr. – and still has a very strong core. The only problem with this cube are the stickers
4. MoYu AoLong V2
This speedcube is old – but still one of the best speedcubes out there. It was considered as the best speedcube in 2016. In fact back in 2015 the MoYu speedcube was the world record holder. This cube is fast, precise and smooth. This is the right choice for you, if you are looking for a crazy good cube for a reasonable price tag. The regular price is $20 – but this speedcube is in sale very often.
5. GAN Air S Magnetic
This is GAN's finest cube. This cube holds the fastest single solve – that should speak for itself. The weight is 76gr. That is very light, when you consider the fact, that this is the magnetic version. As usual for a GAN Speedcube the cube is smooth and supports corner cutting very well. It is probably the single best speedcube in the world today. Of course that has a price: the cube costs about $40 – but it is still worth it!
